Richard L Langer

Richard Leroy Langer, the son of Roy Franz and Jennie (Fulton) Langer, was born at home near Webber, Kansas February 1, 1931. He departed this life on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 3 days.

He graduated from Eckley High School in 1949. A veteran of the Korean War, he enlisted to serve his country on October 28, 1952 and served 19 months in Korea on the front lines until the truce was signed. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on September 18, 1954.

He was united in marriage with Wanda Mays at the Presbyterian Church in Wood River, Nebraska on November 28, 1954. To this union four children were born, Jerry Langer, Joan Shaw, Kathy Babcock and Judy Temaat. He was baptized and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Guide Rock since 1959. Rich served as both a deacon and trustee and was on the pulpit committee.

Richard was a lifetime member of the Nebraska Farmers Union. He also served on the Guide Rock Farmers Union Board of Directors for 27 years and the Guide Rock School Board for 20 years and was honored to present each of his children with their diplomas. He joined the American Legion in 1955, and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and infant sisters, Margaret; sister, Donna and husband Clay Page; Jay and Gladys Mays; an infant unnamed daughter; Eldon and Margorie Mays; Robert and Toni Mays, and Opal Jean and Maurice Paulk. Also preceding him were nephews Brent Paulk, Scott Thompson and Jim Page.

Richard started farming after graduating and farmed until being drafted into the United States Army. He returned to farming after his discharge and was involved in farming the rest of his life. He was happiest when driving his tractor in the fields and taking care of his cattle and hogs. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing sports. When they were playing he was in the stands watching and cheering. He carried pictures of the great grandchildren in his wallet. He never knew a stranger and would talk to anyone. He enjoyed visiting and coffee at the Barcelona Café, the Country Corner and elevator in the mornings. He also enjoyed playing cards and marbles and spent many nights with neighbors over the years playing pitch, pinochle and marbles.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda; son, Jerry and Deb Langer and three daughters, Joan Shaw, Kathy and Ron Babcock, and Judy and Phill Temaat. Also surviving are grandchildren, Melissa and Yancy Dittmer, Stephanie Shaw, Jennifer Shaw, Michael and Megan Shaw, Lindsay and Ben Prater, Jami and Bobby Fender, Cameron Temaat and Jay Temaat; step grandchildren, Jon and Jamie Yoachim and Josh and Paige Yoachim; great grandchildren, Garrett and Addison Dittmer, Peyton Shaw, Miles and Mason Shaw, Axton and Ayven Fender; step-great grandchildren, Cambrie Prater, Clara, Caroline, Donovan and Felicity Yoachim and Harleigh Jo Yoachim; his sister, Esther and Steve Thompson and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were Saturday, 10:00 am, September7, 2019 at the Guide Rock School Gymnasium with Rev. Greg Allen-Pickett officiating. Interment with military honors was at the Guide Rock Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Guide Rock American Legion or the Guide Rock Fire Department.
