Ruth Berniece Schriever Obituary

Berniece Schriever, daughter of Clarence and Anna (Matthews) Bailey was born on December 18, 1917 on a farm north of Superior, Nebraska.  She passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 100 years, 8 months, and 29 days.

She attended a country school through 8th grade & graduated from Superior High School with the class of 1936.

On October 17, 1937   Berniece was united in marriage to Elmer J. Schriever at Salem Lutheran church north of Superior.  To this marriage one daughter, Anna Eileen, was born.    Elmer and Berniece lived on a farm outside of Superior and Berniece was a partner to Elmer on the farm raising cattle and chickens, helping with the farm work, and the daily household duties.

She was baptized and confirmed at Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior on January 23, 1946 by Rev. A.G.Ahlman and in later years a member at Salem Lutheran Church.

She was a member of the school board at Beaverville Elementary School and was a strong advocate for the students.  She was also a member of women’s groups including, Rural Social Circle, Sunnyside Club, and the Birthday Club.  She loved to play pitch & pinochle and never turned down an offer to play cards.  She and Elmer were members of a pinochle group for over 40 years with neighbors & family members.  Elmer and Berniece enjoyed many years on the dance floor with friends and family.

Berniece worked outside the home for ten years at the Good Samaritan Society as a medication aide & care provider.  She enjoyed those years of caring for others.  The next 20 years she worked as a dietary assistant and then in housekeeping services at Brodstone Memorial Hospital, where she again enjoyed her work and co-workers.  She voluntarily retired at the age of 80 years & always said she “supposed her employer thought it was time for her to retire”.

She and Elmer moved from the farm in March, 1984 to an acreage west of Superior where she remained until August, 2007.

Elmer passed away April 5, 1990.  Berniece continued to work at the hospital & spent many hours in her flower gardens.   She moved to the Kearney Manor at the age of 89 where she lived before relocating to Welcov Assisted Living, Kearney, NE, in January 2014.

She enjoyed her 100th birthday celebration in December of 2017 with family & relished the cards & letters received.

She was an example of hard work & endurance during the tough times of life.  It was only in the last months that her memory began to fade & with that her amazing ability to recall the dates of life events.

Berniece was preceded in death by her parents and spouse Elmer.

She is survived by one daughter Eileen Kottmeyer and husband Mark of Kearney, Nebraska, three grandchildren, Ann Shirley and spouse Kane of Kearney, Ben Kottmeyer of Denver, CO.  and Lee Kottmeyer of Omaha, NE, one great-grandchild, Korbin Shirley, and nieces and nephews, who were like children to her and Elmer.

Funeral services were Saturday 10:30 am, September 22, 2018 at Salem Lutheran Church with  Pastor Ethan Feistner officiating. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Nebraska.
