Velma Gertrude Litster, the daughter of Trena Kathern (Schaa) and Ted Knehans, was born September 12, 1927 at Guide Rock, Nebraska. She departed this life on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 26 days.
Velma received her formal education riding her blind horse to country school and then graduated from the Red Cloud High School. She worked for a period of time as a waitress with Sid’s Café. Velma later moved to Hastings, Nebraska where she was employed with the Naval Ammunition Depot. While working there she met her husband, Donald David Litster. They were united in marriage on March 9, 1946 at South Sioux City, Iowa. This union was blessed with a daughter, Linda Marie, in 1948, and a son, David Donald in 1952. In 1947, they moved to Red Cloud where Donald Farmed and in 1952, they returned to Hastings where she was employed as a foreman at the potato factory and also worked as a sales representative with Avon.
She was an active and dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church and was involved through the years with a number of the church’s activities and groups.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Donald, on June 26, 2005, and a sister, Darlene Osborne.
Left to treasure her memory are her daughter, Linda Kubin of Manhattan, Kansas, her son, David Litster of Hastings, Nebraska; five grandchildren; her great grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Knehans; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., November 13, 2019 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Paul Warneke officiating. Interment will be at the Red Cloud Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud and Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church.
