Virginia Ellen (Gunn) Portrey

Virginia "Ginny" Ellen Portrey passed from this life on November 21, 2018 at Kensington Manor in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 94 years.

A private family service will be held graveside at the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar, Nebraska at a later date.

Ginny was born to Verna and Newton Gunn on July 1, 1924 in Edgar, Nebraska. She graduated from Edgar High School in 1942 and soon after moved, along with her brother Bob to Long Beach, California where they were employed at the Douglas Aircraft Company.

There Ginny met her future husband, Carl Kelly, and after their marriage moved to Carl's family farm in Cabool, Missouri where Carl was employed by a car dealership and Ginny worked in management at the Levi Corporation. After Carl's sudden death, Ginny moved to Houston, Missouri where she eventually met and married Lester Portrey.  Lester owned and operated a wrecking and repair service.

Ginny remained in Houston after Lester's  passing until health issues brought her home to Edgar, Nebraska where she could be closer to family.

In her younger days, Ginny was the epitome of stylish fashion; adorned in tasteful jewelry, which almost always included a shiny bangle on her wrist, red lacquered fingernails and a becoming up-do hairstyle.

Ginny's sparkling personality, quick wit, and southern charm made her the life of any gathering.  Nothing made her happier than chatting with family or friends over a cup of hot coffee and a piece of her famous chocolate cream pie.  She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, playing cards with friends and shooing the turkey buzzards from her trees with her shot gun. Most of all she enjoyed people. Her friendships were many throughout her lifetime for to know her was to love her.

Ginny was preceded in death by her mother Verna Huffman Gunn, father Newton "Newt" Gunn, first husband Carl Kelly, husband Lester Portrey, infant brother Gerald, brother Bob and wife Annabelle, brother Bill and his son Scott, brother Donnie and brother Dean Gunn.

She is survived by her sister Genevieve Northrop of Hastings, NE; Donnie's wife Marianna Gunn of Edgar, NE; Bill's wife, Teed Gunn of Oakley, KS along with six great nieces and four great nephews.
