Barbara "Bobbie" (Mileger) Shuck

Barbara June “Bobbie” (Mileger) Shuck was born March 19, 1926 in Edgar, Nebraska and entered into eternal peace on February 18, 2020 at the Valley Regional Hospital in Brownsville, Texas, with her five children by her side. Bobbie lived a long and fulfilling life of 93 years and was ready to “go home” to be with her beloved husband Bill and her dear sisters, Billie and Pat.  Bobbie was the middle daughter of Ralph and Fannie (Jeffs) Mileger and lived her entire life in the Edgar community, supplemented by the last 10 years as a Winter Texan in the South Padre Island/Long Island Village area. She loved both locations and had many cherished friends in both places.

Bobbie had a delightful childhood, though her family endured the struggles of the 1930’s and 40’s, as did everyone else. Enjoying simple pleasures was the normal way of life for her and her many friends and her loving family members.   She was an Edgar High School cheerleader, graduating in1944.  Bobbie worked at the Air Force Training Base in Harvard, Nebraska, until her marriage to Bill Shuck on Nov. 11, 1945, which was the beginning of a 64 year family farming endeavor undertaken by Bill and Bobbie. This farming legacy is carried on today by their five children, Pam, Tom, Sam, Brad and Greg.       

Bobbie loved life on the farm near her small rural agricultural community and did her part to make it a great place to live and raise her family. She was a Cub Scout leader, on the Girl Scout Council, Sunday School Teacher, in the Ladies Aide of the Edgar Christian Church, serving as President for 25 years and on the Church Board for over 20 years, and a 43 year member of the local PEO Chapter AA, serving in various positions, including President for 4 years. You could always count on Bobbie to be supportive of any project, event or organization in the Edgar community or surrounding area including the Edgar Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, the Edgar American Legion and Auxiliary, the Edgar Community Club, the Edgar Lions Club, the Edgar Christian Church, the Sandy Creek Public Schools, the Edgar Alumni Association, the summer EdgarFest celebration and the Superior Elks, to name a few.  Plus Bobbie and Bill were regular attendees at the Old Trusty Days at the Clay County Fairgrounds and the Husker Harvest Days Farm Show west of Grand Island.

Bobbie was an excellent bowler, as a member of a local bowling team as well as a traveling team; she went to State Bowling tournaments many times, plus her trips with her bowling team to the national tournament in Kansas City and Las Vegas were legendary.  Bobbie played bridge in many settings and her children loved for her to have bridge club at their house so that they could partake the next day of the left-over snacks she had prepared. During the winter months, Bill and Bobbie played many competitive card and domino games with their sons and wives and later the grandkids too. Bobbie enjoyed sports and was an avid Husker football fan plus liked to watch the College World Series baseball games.  You could depend on finding her at any sporting event in which her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren were participating. In fact, the night before she made her final trip as a Winter Texan, she was at a basketball game (in her wheelchair) to watch her twin grandsons, Hayden and Parker, play.  She was everyone’s biggest cheerleader and fan.

Bobbie and Bill enjoyed camping, starting out tent camping at the Scout Cabin on the Little Blue River and at their farm they called Wavy, which had the Sandy Creek running through it.  They upgraded to a pop-up and then a motor home and enjoyed many week-ends with family members and friends at Lovewell Lake just over the border into Kansas.  In the 80’s, Bill and Bobbie started their love affair with South Padre Island, first with their motor home on the beach and then by renting houses on the Island.  After Bill passed, Bobbie continued to be a Winter Texan and spent many winters in Texas at the La Copa Inn on South Padre Island and Long Island Village in Port Isabel, Texas with her daughter Pam and niece Kay and Ray Griffiths.  Bobbie also looked forward to the August vacations they would take with son Sam and Sonja and truly enjoyed the visits to Missoula, Montana, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Marshall, Minnesota where they visited extended family and saw the sights.  Bobbie was just as dedicated as Pam was to getting as many National Park stamps possible on these driving vacations. 

But most of all Bobbie loved spending time with all of her family and her many friends.  She loved her children, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and always looked forward to their visits. Grandma Bobbie was a great listener and wonderful care-giver to her family and extended family members and everyone was always welcome to her home and to her table.  She was an integral part of the lives of her grandchildren, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and delighted in watching them grow to adulthood.  Bobbie will be remembered for her Christian faith, her lovely smile, her generosity, graciousness, kindness and caring, her good cooking (especially her rhubarb pie, potato salad and fried chicken), her laughter and the blessing she was to all that knew her.  She was a superb role model and she will be missed.

Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Fannie Mileger, her in-laws Robert “Bob” and Minnie (Kirkhoff) Shuck, her husband Bill in 2009, her sisters Billie Larson and Pat Swanson, her niece Connie (Swanson) Stych, her nephews David and Larry Swanson, her brothers-in-law Chet Larson and Bob Swanson, and brothers and sisters-in laws, Byrle and Elizabeth Shuck and John and Lois (Shuck) McLaughlin.

Those who are blessed to have had her in their life and will cherish her memory forever are her children; daughter Pam Shuck Maynard of Edgar and her son Andy and his sons Jackson and Jake Mace-Maynard; son Tom Shuck of Toronto, Canada and Clearwater, Florida, his wife Dianne, their son and daughter-in-law Jason and Britta Shuck, and their daughter Justine Shuck;  son Sam Shuck of Wood River, Ne, his wife Sonja, their daughters Serina Shuck and Megan Shaw, her husband Darren and their children Madison, Landon and Grant; son Brad Shuck of Edgar, his wife Pam, their children Norrisa Flores and her husband James and their children Cora and Ruby; Riley Shuck and boyfriend Brandon Benes; Kalen Shuck and his wife Kym and their children Ashton and Adalyn; and Breanna Elting and her husband Carl and their child Gabriel; son Greg Shuck of Edgar and his children, Connor, Colton, Hayden and Parker. She will also be fondly remembered by special nieces and nephews Kay (McLaughlin) and Ray Griffiths and their family; Robin (Swanson) and Ed Skinner and family; John and Mary Larson and family; Jill Larson and family; Pam Swanson and family; Celia Swanson and family;  Doug and Vicki McLaughlin and family; Cathy (Shuck) Chowenhill and family; and Billy Shuck and family; plus many, many other cherished relatives and dear friends.

An informal Celebration of Life was held on Feb. 20, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the La Copa Hotel Dining Room on South Padre Island, Texas, where she met and made so many new friends. Her funeral service, arranged by Williams Funeral Home, will be Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Edgar, Nebraska. A lunch following her committal in the Edgar cemetery will be at the Edgar American Legion Hall. Services were Wednesday 10:30 am, February 26, 2020 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar, NE.  with Pastor David King officiating.  Burial was at the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar, NE.
