Bettie Jane (Nelson) Bruns

Bettie J. Bruns grew up on a farm where her dad, John Nelson, raised hogs, sheep and milked cows. Bettie attended grade school at a "country school" and High School in Edgar, NE. Bettie excelled in school and even skipped a grade, but then later her mom held her back so she could graduate with her classmates. She loved spelling and attended several spelling contests as a child. Bettie taught at a country school about 3 miles from her parents house for a couple of years.

As Bettie was on her way to register for Business College in Lincoln, Herb proposed to Bettie, and she decided to accept his proposal. They proceeded onto Wahoo, NE where Herb and Bill Corman bought two rings. According to Herb they were on sale, perhaps a two for one sale. After a one or two week engagement, Bettie married Herbet W. Bruns and they had a double wedding with Bill and Donna (Gunn) Corman on August 18, 1946 at the Lutheran Church in Mankato, KS. Bettie and Herb were married for 62 years before he passed away on February 20, 2008. 

Bettie was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary. She sold poppy flowers each year and helped with events at the American Legion including Friday night fish fries. She was an active member of LWML at Centennial Lutheran Church. Bettie and Herb were big time Nebraska football fans, holding season tickets for several decades.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Nelson (1977) and Clara Nelson (1988), her brother Leo Nelson (1983), her sister Geraldine (Nelson) Hineline (2012),  her husband Herbert W. Bruns (2008), and 1st husband Hugh Ruttman (fallen soldier - 1944) and her daughter-in-law Kellei Bruns (2015).

Among her survivors are her children: Connie and Larry Pike, Sheryl and Bob Parrish, Steve Bruns, and David and Trisha Bruns. Her grandkids Brent and Amber Pike, Kelly Pike, Ashley and Cory Bailey, Dionne Gamache, Frank Parrish, Zach and Jennifer Bruns, Jon Bruns, and Katie Bruns, her great grandchildren Camden, Gabby, Christian, Cayden, Gaten, Ashton, Ashley and Rey Rivera, Charlie Gamache and fiance Amber, Desilee, Barrett, Jacob, and Ellei.
