Ruth Carol Abbott Kellogg, was born to Earl and Melba (Spurrier) Abbott in Red Cloud, Nebraska on September 25, 1945. She passed away at Lawrence, Kansas Memorial Hospital on May 28, 2023.
Carol grew up in Smith County, Kansas and attended the Oriole Grade School and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1963. She was united in marriage with Wendell Walter Kellogg at the Lebanon Christian Church. Wendell and Carol were later divorced. However, two beautiful children, Chris and Trisha, blessed this marriage. They were a delight to both of their parents. They all found Salina, Kansas their home while the children were in school and involved in many activities.
Carol always wanted to be where the fun was. She moved to Lawrence, the home of her beloved Jayhawks and the Village she loved. She found much joy in helping others. It was no surprise she enjoyed her employment assisting the elderly. She worked at Retirement Management Company, Arbor Court and Presbyterian Manor. She also served as Activities Director for Brandon Wood Retirement Center. Carol also had a calling to be a part of the Greek Life on campus. This led her to be a House “Mom” to Sigma Chi Fraternity, as well as a Sorority “Mom” to the Jewish Sorority at KU.
She was strong, determined, smart, witty, beautiful and ambitious. She was full of joy. These precious traits and a long history of health issues, NOTHING slowed her down! Even as recent as 2019, Carol rented a storage unit in Lawrence, filled it, packed her car and headed to the University of Idaho! Here she became Resident Assistants to Tri Delta and Delta Gamma Sororities.
In the spring of 2022, Carol received the devastating news that her cancer had returned. Her wishes were to return home to Lawrence for treatment. Yes, Lawrence and yes the home of her Beloved Jayhawks. Carol will be greatly missed by her many friends and her wonderful family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Earl and Melba Abbott; brothers, Norman and Morris Abbott, and a baby brother, Elmer Abbott.
Surviving are her children: Christopher Robert Kellogg of Newton, Kansas, and Patricia Lynn Kellogg of Ogden, Utah; a grandson, Chase Riley Kellogg; great grandchildren Jaspen Kellogg and Zane Kellogg; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services and inurnment were at the Mt. Hope Church and cemetery (north Smith County, Kansas) on June 24th, 2023, at 11:00 am with Pastor Laura Fricker officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the Lebanon Alumni Association.
