DaVee Garman Obituary

DaVee Lou Ann Garman, the daughter of James H. Garman and Freda N. (Bishop) Garman was born on December 9, 1959 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. December 9th was a special day for her sister Debra (Garman) Hersh because it happened to be her birthday as well. DaVee departed this life unexpectedly on January 20th at the age of 63.

DaVee and her family moved from Burr Oak, Kansas to Bladen, Nebraska in 1961 when DaVee was 2 years old. Her parents purchased the White Front Garage on Main Street in Bladen.

DaVee often shared fond memories of her time helping her parents down at the station. She was most excited when dad handed her the keys to a customer’s car. Telling her to drive it in the shop or “get the tire fixed sis”. To our knowledge no damage was done and she still remembered some of the “cool” cars that would come in for services.

She spoke often of her time growing up in Bladen. How her classmates and friends would cruise and “whip kitties” up and down Main Street in her beloved Charger. She graduated from “The Original” Bladen High school in 1978.

After high school, DaVee met her lifelong partner, Richard “Rick” Whitten. They welcomed their son Michael Whitten in 1983. After Michaels birth, they moved to Hastings and lived there till 1988. They then moved to Harvard, Nebraska until 2004 when they returned to Bladen to care for her dad and to be closer to her family. After Ricks passing in 2015, DaVee continued to live in Bladen and began cooking at the bar downtown. She loved serving meals to the seniors and being active in the community. It was not uncommon to see her running errands with her granddaughters in tow. They were her pride and joy, despite parent protest she would always take them to the store for candy and pop after school. She made it her mission to properly spoil those girls as much as she could. Teaching them grandma’s special recipes and always making the best cakes for any special event. DaVee loved spending time with her family. Didn’t matter if it was a back yard bonfire, family dinner or camping trip. She was always there for the ones she loved.

Preceding her in death was her mother, Freda Garman, her father, James Garman, and her lifelong partner, Rick Whitten. As well as Rick’s mother, Bonnie Whitten and father, Glen Whitten who she loved dearly.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael Whitten and wife Stacy and their children Isabella “Izzy”, Olivia, and Adalyn “Addy” of Bladen, Nebraska. Sister, Deb Hersh and husband Rick of Inavale, Nebraska. Niece Jeannie Hersh and husband Ray of Bee Cave, Texas. Nephew Pat Hersh and wife Ashley of Inavale, Nebraska, Nephew Joe Hersh and wife Jennifer of Inavale, Nebraska and many great nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be 11:00 am,  Saturday, March 4, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Bladen with Terry Carter officiating.
