Doris Hancock Obituary

Doris L. Hancock, the daughter of Ada (Carter) and Charles Koch, was born December 3, 1924 on the family farm in Smith County, Kansas.  She peacefully departed this life on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the SunPorch of Smith County in Smith Center, Kansas.

Doris attended the Lebanon schools and graduated with the class of 1942. She was elected class president their senior year and proudly served on the school's state debate team. She completed her formal education at the Grand Island School of Business. After receiving her degree, she moved to Chicago to work for a period of time. On June 4, 1946 she was united in marriage with Lowell E. "Bucky" Hancock at Phillipsburg, Kansas. This union was blessed with four children, Doug, Cheryl, Carol and Connie. They lived and raised their family on a farm south of Red Cloud where they resided for ten years, then moved to their farm south of Esbon. Doris loved their life on the farm and worked side by side with Lowell through the years to make the farming operation a success.

Doris worked for a time with the REA Office in Mankato and then served for over thirty years as the Administrator of the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato. In her leisure time she enjoyed quilting, fishing ( which included teaching all of her family to spit on the lure for good luck), and gardening. She will be fondly remembered as an excellent cook and will be particularly remembered for her wonderful pies. She was a member of the Esbon Methodist Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  Her love for her family was immeasurable and she deeply cherished the time spent with all of them.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Lowell, on September 5, 2004; her daughter, Cheryl, in July of 2015, and sister, Pauline.

Left to treasure her memory are her children, Doug Hancock and wife Karen of Esbon, Kansas; Carol DeWitt and husband Roy of Linn Creek, Missouri; and Connie Aspegren and husband Ron of Courtland, Kansas; son-in-law, David McMullen of Courtland; 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were Friday, 10:30 a.m., July 6, 2018 at the Methodist Church in Esbon, Kansas with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Interment was at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Esbon.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.
