Doris Jane Owens, the daughter of Bill and Ella (Streit) Osborn, was born November 2, 1932 at the family farm northwest of Red Cloud, Nebraska. She departed this life on July 31, 2023, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 29 days.
She grew up in the Red Cloud community and graduated from the Red Cloud High School in 1950. She completed her formal education attending Kearney State Teachers College, receiving a certificate in teaching. She taught rural school for two years and on July 1, 1952, she was united in marriage with Maynard Owens in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with four children, Kathy, Larry, Randy and Debra. Doris continued to teach school for ten more years. In 1972, Doris began her employment in the housekeeping department with the Webster County Community Hospital, retiring in 1994. In 1989, Maynard began his own trucking company and took Doris with him on many trips around the country. In her leisure time she enjoyed crafts with her daughters and granddaughters, homemaking and spending time with her family and many friends. Doris possessed an endless amount of energy and determination. Both attributes that served her well her entire life.
Doris’ life was filled with her immeasurable love for her family. She proudly said that each had a different personality and that they all were unique in their own way.
Preceding her in death were her parents; sister, Evelyn Avers; brother-in-law, Kenneth Avers and nephew Dennis Avers.
Left to treasure her memory are her husband, Maynard, of Red Cloud; 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren: daughter, Kathy Owens and son, Jason and children Tegan and husband, Andrew and Trista; son, Larry Owens and wife, Jayne, and children, Brian and wife Lindsay, and their children, Nicole, Jackson, Kara Jo, Isabelle, Martin, Sofie Mae and Cooper; Leslie and Dennis Muff and their children Maverick and Jennifer (Korralyn and Blakely); Vanessa and Sierra; son, Randy Owens and wife, Peggy and children Greg and Rachel Eckhardt (Landon), Mike Eckhardt and daughter, Grace, Matt and Katie Owens and children, Tanner and Jaidyn; Chelsie and Ryan Palu and children, Hannah Ahrens, Kasen and Bryson Palu; daughter, Deb VanWey and husband, Kenny, and children Brent and Alexis VanWey and children, Kaylyn, Makinzie, London and Brogan; Justin and Lizabeth VanWey and children, Tripp and Sutton; and Courtney and Eric Ventura and son, Nolan. Also surviving are a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Friday, 2:00 pm, August 4, 2023, at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with Jeff Ord officiating. Interment was at the Red Cloud Cemetery.
