Dorothy Mattison Obituary

Dorothy Elizabeth Amack Mattison was born June 1, 1924, to Luella and Lloyd Amack in Garfield precinct south of Red Cloud, Nebraska.  She departed this life on Monday, June 14, 2021, at Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, NE.

She was a lifelong resident of Webster County.  In February of 1943 she was united in marriage to Dallas Mattison, who preceded her in death.  To this union two daughters were born: Doreen (Robert) Greenhalgh and Deanna (Dale) Adams.  Dorothy is also survived by two grandchildren: Lisa (Steven) Knapp and Lanny (Kristin) Greenhalgh, 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, and sister Evelyn Davis and Lela Hartman and nieces Elaine Malick who in truth was close in age to Dorothy and was more like a sister.

Dallas and Dorothy raised their daughters on a livestock and crop farm south of Guide Rock. Granddaughter Lisa has many fond memories of spending summers with Grandpa and Grandma on the farm, riding her pony, milking cows, gathering eggs, playing with baby pigs, looking for kittens in the hay mow, and always on Tuesday’s trips to Red Cloud for groceries, a visit to the library and the livestock auction.

Dorothy was very generous with her time, and she devoted her life to serving others.  She volunteered for many organizations in the community including the hsoptial inj Red Cloud, the United Methodist Church, the Webster County Historical Museum and for many years the Willa Cather Foundation, where she became the local expert on Willa Cather.  After the State Historical Society took over the Willa Cather Foundation, Dorothy found herself to be an employee rather than a volunteer.  She retired in 2011 after 53 years of service to the foundation.

Dorothy was an avid reader, loved to do work-search and crossword-puzzles, and play card games.  She also was skilled at knitting, embroidery and quilting.  Dorothy was a devoted Bible student and taught adult Sunday school for 28 years at the Methodist Church.

Dorothy’s family, friends and community were blessed beyond measure by her presence in our lives.

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, “It is more blessed to given than to receive.”

Funeral services will be held this Friday 11:00 am, June 18, 2021 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Red Cloud, NE.  Pastor Bonnie McCord will be officiating.  Burial will be held in the Red Cloud Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com.  Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
