Ernie Wescoat Obituary

Ernest E. Wescoat, the son of Minnie (Morgan) and Hugh Wescoat, was born May 26, 1932 at Riverton, Nebraska. He departed this life on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Brookstone Acres in Columbus, Nebraska at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 17 days.

A lifelong resident of the area, Ernie received his formal education attending the Riverton schools and graduated with the class of 1950. His personality was pervaded by a strong work ethic and Ernie began his first job at the age of ten, working in the meat department at the Riverton grocery store. He was united in marriage with Jean Hollingshead on June 6, 1954 at Riverton. This union was blessed with three children, Terry, JoLyn and Bryan.

In 1961, the family moved to Red Cloud where Ernie began his employment with Clifford Caldwell at the Coast-To-Coast hardware store installing carpet, delivering furniture and working in the store with his many friends and customers. Ernie purchased the business in 1976 and operated the store until his retirement in 1995. In his later years, Ernie was employed by Roger Bohrer with Catherland Auto Sales, a job he greatly enjoyed.

In their leisure time Ernie and Jean treasured their travels and adventures, visiting Europe, Alaska and countless locations and attractions around the United States with family and friends. In their younger years they spent many weekends with the Bob Bohrer family relaxing at Harlan County Lake. Ernie was a true friend to everyone he met and will be deeply missed.

He was a member of the Red Cloud Bible Church and the Red Cloud Lions Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Minnie and Hugh Wescoat; his son, Terry, on August 26, 2010; and four brothers, Edwin, Ray, Elwin and Guy Wescoat.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jean, of Columbus, Nebraska; daughter, JoLyn Reicks of Columbus; son, Bryan Wescoat of Colleyville, Texas; daughter-in-law, Susan Wescoat; three grandchildren, Zack Reicks and wife, Ashley; Tara Wescoat and Cole Wescoat; three great grandchildren, Leyton, Camden and Lily Reicks. Also surviving are his brother, Raymond Wescoat and wife, Dorothy, of Hastings, Nebraska, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
