Hilda Reiher Obituary

Hilda Emma Reiher, the daughter of Anna (Fritz) and Mino Boom, was born December 2, 1919 the youngest of five children. She departed this life on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Christian Homes in Holdrege, Nebraska at the age of 100 years, 8 months and 21 days.

A lifelong resident of Webster county, Hilda received her formal education attending rural school and graduated with a certificate in normal training from the Bladen High School in 1936. She completed her schooling at Wichita University. While living in Wichita, Hilda stayed with her sister and worked as a waitress to pay for her college tuition. She taught in three rural school districts (#4, #9 and #14) in Webster County and then as the second grade teacher in the Red Cloud Public School. Hilda remained committed to her career, substituting in the Red Cloud Elementary School in the 1970’s and 1980’s. She pursued classes at Kearney State Teachers’ College to earn her Substitute Certificate.

In 1944, Hilda was united in marriage with Robert Creighton Reiher. This union was blessed with a son, Richard and a daughter, Kim Reiher Brubaker. They made their home farming and ranching southwest of Red Cloud. Hilda was a dedicated and loving wife and mother raising her children, growing their garden and canning provisions for the family. She also raised chickens for many years.

Hilda was a member of the Congregational Church and was active with the Women’s Fellowship and taught Sunday School. She volunteered her time as a 4-H Leader and with the Boy Scouts. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and was a fifty-year member of P.E.O.

Bob and Hilda had a true loving partnership. In later years they had many adventures collecting antiques and coins, traveling in Kansas and Nebraska. Hilda was able to stay in her own home except the last couple weeks of her life. Saundra Nelson, Jaimi Jones and Cailie Lukes  of Caring Friends made this possible. Their kindness, care and companionship greatly enriched the last nine months of her life. Hilda fondly called them “the girls” and was always entertained by news of their families, camping and fishing excursions, gardening, raising chickens and local news.

Hilda was a lifelong learner and avid reader. After her eyesight failed, she enjoyed books on tape and having her helpers read to her.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her loving husband, Bob, on October 4, 1992; and her siblings.

Left to treasure her memory are her son, Richard and JoAnn Reiher and family, Mitch Lewis, Michelle and Jeff Mans, and Kyle and Kody Mans; her daughter, Kim and Gary Brubaker and grandchildren, Erin Brubaker, and Patrick Brubaker and wife, Stephanie; a great granddaughter, Audrey Brubaker, other relatives and friends.
