Iris Nichols Obituary

Iris Rose (Akin) Nichols daughter of Raymond Douglas and Rose Margaret (Swartz) Akin was born April 29, 1938 in Pueblo, Colorado.  She departed this life on Friday, February 28, 2020 at her daughter’s home in Lindsborg, Kansas at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 28 days.

Iris received her formal education attending school in Pueblo, Colorado.  On June 25, 1955 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Myron (Mickey) Nichols, at Pueblo.  They lived a short time in Westfield, New York then returned to Pueblo where she was a homemaker.  She was involved in 4H with cooking and canning.  She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family.  She told us stories of hanging diapers on a rope between trees and warming baby bottles over campfires.  They lived a short time in Houston, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma.  They returned to Colorado where she worked at Federal Junction and Denny’s for several years as a waitress.  Iris and Mickey moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska to make their home in March of 1989.

Iris was happiest spending time with her family.  Her greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for her loving husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.  She loved cooking, baking and trying new recipes.  She said, “If you don’t hear music in the kitchen, then there isn’t a cook in there either!” She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mickey; a great granddaughter, Jaidyn; her son-in-law, Rick Cabana and son-in-law, Fred Mohlman.

Left to cherish her memory is her brother: Douglas Akin of Eagle, Idaho; cousin, Francis Anselmo and husband Ralph of Pueblo, Colorado was as close to her as a sister. Also surviving are three daughters:  Autumn Mohlman of Blue Hill; Raeann Cabana of Red Cloud; Elaine Bean and husband, Bill, of Lindsborg, Kansas, son-in-law, Charles Ferguson of Brighton, Colorado; her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchild:  Larry Mohlman and wife, Cathy and children:  Dakota, Sierra, Isaiah, Savannah and great-great granddaughter, Ava:  Amanda Wood and husband, Brandon and children: Bailey, Beau and Brient: Cody Mohlman and wife, Kari: Charlene Ferguson: Jolene Bryan and husband, Chad and children:  Blayne, Emily and Cole: several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.

The Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 am, Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with Fr. Paul Frank officiating. Interment was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Red Cloud.
