Jack McCallum Obituary

Jack Charles McCallum, the youngest child of Georgia Pearl (Hall) and Robert Arthur McCallum, was born October 27, 1925, at Blue Hill, Nebraska. He departed this life on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Kenesaw Premier Estates at age of 97 years, 6 months and 28 days.

A lifelong resident of the area, Jack received his formal education attending the Cowles schools and graduated with the class of 1944. Jack was united in marriage with Shirley Mae Dygert on September 18, 1954, at the McCallum home in Bladen with the Rev. Gertrude McCallum officiating. This union was blessed with a son, Jackie Laurence. They made their home in the Cowles community where Jack dedicated his life as a farmer and stockman. He was also a gifted mechanic working with machinery of literally anything that needed repairs.

In his leisure time Jack’s passion was music and dancing, especially Polka dances. Jack and Shirley loved dancing in many places in both Nebraska and Kansas. They especially looked forward to visits with family and friends. Jack’s personality was pervaded by his sense of humor and sincere kindness towards others. He was a 50 year member of the Cowles United Methodist Church and the Eagles Lodge #592 in Hastings, Nebraska.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Jessie Knight, Mary McClain and Ione Weerts, and two brothers, Dallas McCallum and Robert McCallum.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Shirley McCallum of Hastings, Nebraska; his son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Shari McCallum of Carrollton, Texas; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Wednesday, 2:00 pm, May 31, 2023, at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Dale Thiele officiating. Interment was at the Plainview Cemetery at Bladen.
