James Russell Woerner the son of Mitchell Bush and Kathryn Leah (Barry) Woerner was born May 17, 1948, in Superior, Nebraska. He departed this life on Saturday June 5, 2021, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 73 years.

Jim graduated from Superior High School in 1967 and worked as a heavy equipment operator.  In 1968 and 1969 he attended Center Community College in Hastings, Nebraska, receiving his diplomas in Heavy Equipment Operation and Diesel Mechanics.

He was drafted into the United States Army on September 23, 1969, serving in the DMZ in Korea.  Jim honorably discharged on April 27, 1971, and moved to Nelson, Nebraska in May of 1972.

Jim worked at Hermann Brothers Trucking in Superior, NE from 1975 to 1978, John Deere in Fairfield, NE from 1978 to 1979 and was self employed since 1979 doing mechanic jobs and later adding wreckers for towing and recovery services.  Retiring in 2018, he then became a Post Service Officer for the VFW Post #3355.

Jim was the Commander of the VFW post in Nelson in 1999 and served until it closed.  Jim served on the Nelson iron pile committee in Nelson since 2001.  Jim was also instrumental in coordinating meetings with Brodstone Hospital staff members and Don Burman the director of the VA Healthcare System to share ideas regarding veterans needs and what the VA was able to offer n the way of assistance.  Jim also coordinated a scholarship program with the Superior High School, through the Veteran’s Education, Training and Support (V.E.T.S.) group resulting in 78 scholarships being awarded within the past 4 years.  He was especially passionate about restoring the Wildcat Logo on the middle of the gym floor, as it was originally painted by Dean Harig, a 1965 graduate of Superior High School, that lost his life during the Vietnam War.

On June 7, 1969 Jim was united in marriage to Becky Foley and to the union two children were born, Laura (Woerner) Hamil and Tori (Woerner) Ehlers.

He is survived by his wife Becky Woerner of Nelson, NE; daughters: Laura Hamil and husband Tony of Fairview, TX; Tori Ehlers and husband Davon of Superior, NE; two grandchildren: Cameron Ehlers and Leah Ehlers; brothers Mitchie Woerner and Larry Woerner along with a host of many friends and relatives.

Graveside services will be held on July 1, 2021 9:00 am at the Venango Cemetery, Venango, Nebraska (Perkins County).   Wayne Johnson will be officiating.   A book signing will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm with the family present to greet callers from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, NE.  Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com.  Williams Funeral Home of Superior, NE is in charge of the arrangements.
