Jeanne Pope Obituary

Jeanne Johnson Pope was born Jean Averal Johnson on January 23, 1932, to Ward L. and Ocho Marie (Bennett) Johnson at Franklin, Nebraska. She departed this life on December 27, 2023, at Saint Joseph’s Villa, David City, Nebraska at the age of 91 years.

Jeanne spent her life in Franklin, NE, Mountain Grove, MO, Red Cloud, NE, Rapid City, SD and David City, NE.  Jeanne married one of her high school sweethearts, and the love of her life, Cleo Carl Pope on July 6, 1952, at Red Cloud, NE.

Jeanne graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1949.  After graduation, she joined her brother at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln.  She graduated, with high honors, in 1951 with a degree in Elementary Education.  While at UNL, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.  Jeanne was a lifelong-learner, earning her Master’s Degree during her teaching career, including coursework at the University of Wyoming and Concordia University, Seward, NE.  

Jeanne taught at many schools during her career starting at Hebron Elementary, Hebron, NE, the Air Force Base, Rapid City, SD, Franklin County Schools and Butler County Schools in Nebraska and completing her career as assistant to the superintendent of Butler County Schools.

In her free time, Jeanne enjoyed reading, shopping and playing bridge with friends.  She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Jeanne turned her interest in shopping and antiques into a business with her family when they opened an antique shop in David City, The Attic.  Jeanne and Cleo enjoyed traveling to flea markets and buying trips.  

Left to treasure her memory are her son, Joseph Johnson Pope (wife, Shawna) of Urbandale, IA, grandson Aaron Carl (wife, Zoe) of Brooklyn, NY and sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Pursell of Coquille, OR as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins as well as other family and friends.  Mrs. Pope will certainly be remembered by the hundreds of students that she helped successfully begin their education.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, sister, Jacqueline and brother, Jerry.

Graveside services will be Saturday, 2:00 pm, January 6, 2024, at the Red Cloud Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Thiele officiating.
