Joan E. Soucek, the daughter of Budrow “Bud” Frank and Phyllis L. (Kile) Wratten, was born February 13, 1939, at Bladen, Nebraska. She departed this life unexpectedly on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 7 days.
Joan grew up in the Bladen community and received her formal education attending and graduating from the Bladen High School. She was united in marriage with James Lynn Soucek on November 8, 1956, and this union was blessed with four children. Jim and Joan raised their family and made their home on the farm in the Bladen community. Following their retirement in 2000, they moved to Branson, Missouri where they lived until 2004, when they returned to Nebraska to be near their family and they made their home in Hastings.
Joan was a gentle, kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She endured the devastating loss of all four of her children, yet her strength and love persevered and she continued to be an inspiration to everyone who was blessed to know her. In her leisure time Joan enjoyed following and watching Husker volleyball. Throughout her life her greatest love and enthusiasm was for her family and friends, and she especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her personality was pervaded by a quiet and gentle disposition.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; and all four of her children, Holly, Timothy, Jeff and Mitch; and her sister, Jan Stuhr.
Left to treasure her memory are four brothers, Don Wratten and Patricia of Fredericksburg, Texas; Bud Wratten and wife, Vicki of Branson West, Missouri; Ron Wratten of Owasso, Oklahoma and Cal Wratten and wife, Donna of Grand Island, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Ken Stuhr of Waco, Nebraska; her daughter-in-law, Cindy Soucek of McCook, Nebraska; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services will be Saturday, 2:00 pm, December 9, 2023, at the East Lawn Cemetery in Bladen with Pastor John Mueller officiating.
