Lucyle (Lu) Schwartz Obituary

Lucyle Arleen (Lu) Schwartz passed away February 3, 2020 in Reedsport, Oregon. She was born Lucyle Arleen Van Housen on July 25, 1922, the sixth of seven children born to Flora and John Van Housen at the family farm outside of Peetz, Colorado.

She was united in marriage with Kenneth Paul Schwartz at the beginning of WWII in Spokane, Washington. Her husband, Kenny, served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and she worked for the Sioux Army Ordinance Depot in Sidney, Nebraska.  At war’s end, Lu and Kenny moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska where he was the City Manager for the city of Red Cloud and she was employed as secretary for the Nebraska Natural Gas Company.  Lu always took great pride in providing a well kept home for her family and was an excellent gourmet cook.  Lu and her family were particularly fond of the Bighorn Mountains and a cabin there that was introduced to them by the Bill and Mariam Mountford family.

In 1961, she entered the Mrs. America contest and won the honor of being crowned Mrs. Nebraska along with her sister-in-law (Kenneth’s sister), Genevieve Olsen who was Mrs. Wyoming.

Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers, sisters, husband and her daughter, Melanie Schwartz.

Left to treasure her memory are her son, Kaune Schwartz, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Gathering will be Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Pawnee Lake at Guide Rock, Nebraska at the residence of Richard Booker for family and friends.
