Merlin Royce Frey

Merlin R. Frey, the son of Lena Charlotte (Rehtus) and Clifford Carl Frey, was born October 20, 1937 on the family farm in Webster County, Nebraska. He departed this life on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at his home in Red Cloud at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 9 days.

A lifelong resident of the area, Merlin received his formal education attending grade school at Cowles and District #17. His high school years were spent at Eckley, where he graduated with the class of 1955. Merlin worked for a period of time with Harmon Farms at Trumbull before enlisting in the United States Army in 1959. He served his country until his discharge in 1961. Merlin was united in marriage with Loretta Miller on February 1, 1969 at Alma, Nebraska. They made their home on the farm north of Guide Rock until his retirement in 2005, when they moved to Red Cloud.

Merlin pursued a number of interests and activities throughout his life. He received his private pilot's license as a young man. He enjoyed fishing and wood carving. His civic activities included serving on the Board of Directors for Camp Joy at Republican City and he also served on the board for the Wesleyan Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Clifford and Lena Frey.

Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Loretta Frey of Red Cloud; son, Gregory Frey and wife Maggie of Mansfield, Texas; his daughter, Tracy Stocker and husband Chris of Red Cloud; six grandchildren, Sydney and Shelby Frey, Mackenzie Russell and husband Andrew, Madison Stocker, Bethany Stocker and Brenna Stocker; two great grandchildren, Barrett and Laynee Russell; a brother, Norman Frey; sister, Rose Frey; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, 11:00 am, August 2, 2021 at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Dan Benedict officiating. Interment will be at the Guide Rock Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday, 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and Monday, 8:00 am to service time.
