Merna Mae (Schlachter) Kinnison Harms

Merna Mae (Schlachter) Kinnison Harms was born August 15, 1924, at Glenville, Nebraska. She went to be with her Lord on July 5, 2023, at The Ambassader Health of Lincoln at the at of 98 years, 10 months and 20 days.

Merna was united in marriage with Byron “Red” Kinnison for fifty years and Warren Harms her last eight years. Red and Merna owned Kinnison Grocery Store in Edgar for 36 years. She worked hard in the store, as well as a homemaker and raising five children.

She graduated from Practical Nursing School in Kearney, Nebraska in 1980, at the age of 54 and was employed as an LPN at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings and the Harvard Nursing Home.

Merna loved music. She played the organ and also was blessed with a beautiful voice. She sang with a trio for many area funerals. Later in life, she and Warren would sing hymns together quite often. Every day while they could, they would read devotions together and pray for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In her spare time she loved to bake bread, rolls, especially pecan cinnamon rolls and apple and peach pie. She canned fruits, vegetables, made black rasberry jelly and Mrs. Spences21-day sweet pickles. She also loved playing cards. Her greatest love and enthusiasm in life was her devotion to her family and helping others in need.
In 1977, Merna received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and lived the rest of her days serving Him. She has definitely seen His faithfulness.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Red in 1993; a grandson, Scott Lawton in 2010; a daughter, Jane Neely in 2019; all six of her siblings, and her second husband, Warren, on May 2, 2023.

Left to treasure her memory are her children, Roxie Rose of Lincoln, Nebraska; Kris Christman and husband, Gary, of Lincoln; Bobbie Baker and husband, Michael, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Clark Kinnison and wife, Cindy, of Kearney, Nebraska. Also surviving are six step-children, Deanna Stranathan and husband, Mike, of Lincoln, Nebraska; Buffy Cornish and husband, Gary, of Elmwood; Juliene Bryan and husband, Bill of Fairfield; Curtis Harms and wife, Judy, of Fairfield; Terry Harms and wife, Danna, of Texas and Bryan Harms and wife, Fonnette, of Texas; 13 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and many step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday, 1:30 pm, July 10, 2023, at the Williams Funeral Home in Edgar with Pastor Michael and Bobbie Baker officiating with interment at the Edgar Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established by the family for later designation. Memorials can be sent to the family at Kris Christman, 7100 Stony Ridge Road, Lincoln, Nebraska 68507.
