Philip L. Gleason was born June 25, 1945 to Frieda (Ohmstede) and Gerald “Judd” Gleason. He departed this life Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Kearney Regional Medical Center, Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 22 days.
Phil attended school at Guide Rock where he graduated with the class of 1963, as a letter winner in multiple sports, winning district championships in pole vault and discuss. After high school he enrolled at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska with a full ride scholarship in track and field to compete in shotput, pole vault and discuss. During this time he amassed impressive accolades from national to state championship awards. Shortly after college he returned home to work on the family farm.
On August 29, 1965, he was united in marriage with Betty Bass in Red Cloud, Nebraska. This union was blessed with two sons, David Allan and Timothy Lee. They made their home in the Guide Rock community where they farmed together. Later in life, Phil had a construction business where he fabricated buildings and grain bins, employing his sons and friends. After concluding his construction business, he was hired as a crop adjuster while also continuing to farm. Phil was passionate about farming and continuously learning about new crops throughout his farming career. In 2016, he began an adventure with his sons to grow Hops to sell to craft brewers and had five years of award-winning production.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He was an avid Nebraska football and baseball fan and enjoyed watching and listening to the games. He loved spending time on the farm caring for his livestock and crops. Phil’s favorite time of years was fall harvest and deer season as he got to spend qulaity time socializing with friends and family. His greatest love and joy in life was spending time with his sons and grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Frieda (1909 - 2001) and Gerald (1908 - 1999), and his wife, Betty (1944 - 2011).
Left to treasure his memory are two sons, David and wife Lisa of Kearney, Nebraska and their sons, Zach and great grandsons Graham and Connor, and Dalton and wife, Danielle; and Tim and wife Karen of O’Neill, Nebraska and their children Garrett, Tyler, Hannah and Megan; a sister, Nancy Bell and husband Laddie of Fort Meyers, Florida; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, 10:30 am, February 21, 2023, at the Guide Rock United Methodist Church with Jeff Ord officiating. Interment was be at the Guide Rock Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday, 9:00 am - 7:00 pm at the funeral home and Tuesday, 8:00 am to service time at the church.
