Roy Vap Obituary

Roy Mitchell Vap, the son of Theresa (Bursovsky) and Melvin Vap, was born July 27, 1951 at Hastings, Nebraska. He departed this life on April 21, 2021 at CHI St. Elizabeth Regional Health Center in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 24 days.

A lifelong resident of the area, Roy grew up in Clay County and graduated from Sandy Creek High School with the Class of 1969. He continued his formal education at Kearney State Teachers College where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology with a minor in Business. Roy was united in marriage with Cheryl Mays on October 2, 1971 at Kearney, Nebraska.

A veteran of the United States Army, Roy was inducted on November 8, 1973. While serving in the armed forces, Roy was professionally trained as a Medical Lab Specialist. On June 7, 1977 he was discharged at the rank of Sergeant from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Roy and Cheryl moved to the Lawrence/Deweese area to make their home. Roy dedicated his professional life to the medical field and helping others. He was employed at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud where he developed the Lab facilities and also served as the hospital administrator. In 1984, the family moved to Red Cloud where they lived on the farm south of town.

Roy was a member of the Red Cloud Sacred Heart Church and faithfully served as a lector for many years. He also belonged to the American Legion Post at both Lawrence and then Red Cloud.  In his leisure time Roy enjoyed working on the farm, fishing, antiques, cars and riding his motorcycle. He was also passionate about flying and had earned his Private Pilot’s license in aviation. Roy’s greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for his family and he especially looked forward to the time they spent together.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Theresa and Melvin Vap and a brother, Larry Vap.

Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Cheryl of Red Cloud; daughter, Mistie Day and husband Mitch of Post, Texas; sons, Torrey Vap and wife Erika of Riverview, Florida and Jeff Vap and wife Ashlee of Aurora, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren (with 1 on the way); 4 great grandchildren (also with 1 on the way); sisters, Jean Ritchie of Hebron, Nebraska and Debbie Eickmann of Edgar, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.
