Shirley Mae McCallum, the daughter of Dennis Laurence and Birdean Kathryn (Kennel) Dygert, was born May 1, 1936 at Shelby, Nebraska. She departed this life on March 19, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 87.
A longtime resident of the Cowles community, Shirley received her formal education attending the Cowles schools and graduated with the class of 1953. She was united in marriage with Jack Charles McCallum on September 18, 1954, at the McCallum home in Bladen, Nebraska by Rev. Gertrude McCallum. This union was blessed with a son, Jackie Laurence. They lived in the Cowles community where they farmed and raised livestock. Shirley was a dedicated wife and mother, and was actively involved in her community. She was a member of the Cowles United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and she taught both Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the Cowles Craft Club.
In her leisure time she enjoyed cooking, baking (especially pies) and collecting recipes. Shirley was an accomplished seamstress and sewed for herself, her family and many friends. She and Jack also enjoyed dancing and their favorite was the polka. Her greatest love and enthusiasm in life was spending time with family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jack, on May 25, 2023; a brother, Richard Dygert and his wife, Helen; and brothers-in-law, Richard Broz and Raymond Strauss.
Left to treasure her memory are her son, Jackie McCallum of Carrollton, Texas; brother, Bob Dygert and wife, Coleen; sisters, Norene Broz, Nancy Strauss and Cynthia Anderson and husband, Chris; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, 1:00 pm, March 26, 2024, at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud. Interment will be at the Plainview Cemetery in Bladen.
