Virgil Alvin Goos, the son of Fern E. (Killough) and Joseph Jacob Goos, was born April 29, 1939, at Cowles, Nebraska. He departed this life on January 7, 2023 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 8 days.
A lifelong resident of the area, Virgil received his formal education attending and graduating from the Cowles High School. Virgil then began his employment with SealRite Windows in Lincoln and he worked with them from 1956 until 1977. Virgil was united in marriage with Beverly Ann First on June 4, 1961, at the Congregational Church in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with two children, Becky and Randy. In 1977, they returned to Red Cloud where they owned and operated the Stock-Aid Liquor Store for seven years. Virgil was also employed by the Red Cloud schools as a custodian and bus driver for many years. He then worked with his son, Randy, as a carpenter doing residential construction and remodeling for many years.
Virgil was committed to his civic duties and served his community as a member of the city council, he served for many years with the Red Cloud Fire Department and was elected Mayor of Red Cloud. In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, being outdoors and gardening. He was happiest when he was spending time with his family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Beverly, on July 15, 2017; a brother, Delbert Goos, son-in-law, Leon Lyon and a niece, JoAnne Howard.
Left to treasure his memory are his children, Becky Lyon of Alma, Nebraska; his son, Randy Goos and wife Lisa of Red Cloud; five grandchildren: Tyler Ferebee, Joel (Amy) Ferebee, Rowdy (Brooke) Goos, Ali (David) Goos Hadley and Taylor Goos; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen Howard of Hastings, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Janice Goos; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, 10:30 am., January 14, 2023, at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Gary Bennett officiating. Interment will be at the Red Cloud, Nebraska.
